Portrait photography or Portraiture is an art of photography where the main focus is applied on the face of a person of group of people; it can include whole body or background. Different kind of photography techniques are discovered after the inversion of the camera, Portraiture is one of them. For becoming a good portraiture we must know all the components of the camera, how it works, lighting effects etc.

Different kind of lighting effects are there to enhance the quality of the portrait. Lighting for the portraiture can generate magnificent effects on the photograph. An expert portrait photographer knows the right amount of the light, which should be used during the photography. Practicing the photography can help in improving the skills of portraiture. Lighting effects like three point lighting, key light, fill light, back light etc.

Lenses used for portrait photography are faster, medium telephoto lenses, though any lens may be used, depending on artistic purposes. Different focus lenses are used for different purpose portrait photography effects like fisheye lenses are used for artistic effect. Portrait lenses are often relatively inexpensive, because they can be built simply, and are close to the normal range.

According to Arthur Hammond, amateur and professional photographers need only two things to light a portrait: a window and a reflector. The art of taking the picture in window light is known as window light portrait. The best time to take window light portrait is considered to be early hours of the day and late hours of afternoon when light is more intense on the window.

There are many different techniques for portrait photography. Often it is desirable to capture the subject's eyes and face in sharp focus while allowing other less important elements to be rendered in a soft focus. At other times, portraits of individual features might be the focus of a composition such as the hands, eyes or part of the subject's torso.

Image capture can be achieved through various combinations of shutter speed, aperture, and film or sensor speed. A slower speed film will exhibit less "grain", and a slower speed setting on an electronic sensor will exhibit less "noise", while higher film and sensor speeds allow for a faster shutter speed, which reduces motion blur or allows the use of a smaller aperture to increase the depth of field.

When people have a camera in their face it usually makes them nervous and they will try to put on a face that does not portray who they really are. The real skill to portrait photography is trying to capture photos when the subjects are comfortable and not worried about a camera. For close-up portraits use a wide aperture (low f/stop) to make the background out of focus and therefore less of a distraction.

Environmental pictures can have good historical and social significance as primary sources of information. The candid approach is where people are photographed without their knowledge going about their daily business. Less invasive and exploitative candid photography has given the world superb and important images of people in various situations and places over the world.

Photography is one of the new media forms that changes perception and changes the structure of society. Further unease has been caused around cameras in regards to desensitization. Many people take photographs for commercial purposes. Organizations with a budget and a need for photography have several options: they can employ a photographer directly, organize a public competition, or obtain rights to stock photographs.

It depends on the photographer how he wants or in which field he wants to groom the photography skills. Some people are good with the portrait photography; others are expert in their section. Other photography techniques are there like Stereoscopic, Light field photography, Full-spectrum, Ultraviolet and Infrared. Choosing the photography technique defines your working abilities, as these techniques require different practice levels.
